Hymns

Hymn GTG #12, “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise”
Hymn GTG #648, "Thankful Hearts and Voices Raise"
Hymn GTG #24, “God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens”

Call to Worship (based on Job 38:4, 16-17)

Leader: Where were you when God laid the earth’s foundations?
People: We were yet unborn, yet unimagined, yet uncreated.
Leader: Have you walked in the chamber of the deep? Have death’s gates been revealed to you?
People: Our knowledge is limited; our understanding, meager.
Leader: We come before God to serve in humility.
People: Let us worship the One who has created all, knows all, and loves all.

Call to Confession (Job 38:1-3)

Leader: Our God is not one who ignores our complaints or acts without consideration for our concerns, but a god who responds. In this same spirit, let us likewise respond to God’s grace by confessing our sins in honesty and humility.

Popcorn Prayer of Confession (based on Job 38:2-4, 32-34)

You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness. When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:

People: Rock of Ages, we confess our hubris: we cannot guide the stars or issue orders to the clouds, yet we act as though creation is ours to control. We confess our ignorance: we were not there to watch the universe unfold by your hand, yet we pretend to understand it perfectly. We confess our neglect: you have charged us with stewardship of your creation, yet we have exploited and destroyed that which you have called good. Turn us from darkening counsel, banish words lacking knowledge from our lips, and help us to regain the trust you placed in us at our beginning. In your mercy, hear our prayers… (Silent prayers of personal confession)

Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Job 38:6-7)

Leader: When God laid the cornerstone for the earth, the morning stars sang, and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy. Today, the heavens again rejoice in our new creation through Christ, proclaiming to us: we are forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
