Call to Worship (based on 1 John 5:2-3)

Leader: Why do we keep God’s commandments?
People: Because it is the way we show our love for God.
Leader: Why do we keep God’s commandments?
People: Because it is the way we show our love for God’s children.
Leader: Why do we keep God’s commandments?
People: Because we worship the Lord of Love!

Call to Confession (based on 1 John 5:4)

Leader: Indeed, Love has come through Christ’s incarnation. Trusting in this love, let us confess own sin so that it might not stand between us and our God, and we might take part in Christ’s victory over the evil forces of this world.

Popcorn Prayer of Confession (based on 1 John 5:3, 2 Cor. 12:9, Mark 9:24)

You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:

People: God of Love, we confess that your commandments are not difficult, that goodness is stronger than evil, that you have already given us victory over sin. Yet we act as though we have not been saved, as though hate and evil are omnipotent, as though you ask too much of us. We act as though your grace is not sufficient for us. Forgive us, O Lord, for our foolish thinking. We believe, Holy One; help our unbelief. In your mercy, hear our prayers…

(Silent prayers of personal confession)

Declaration of Forgiveness (based on 1 John 5:1)

Leader: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has already been born from God. Your sin has no power over you: in Christ’s name, we are already forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
