Call to Worship (based on 1 Samuel 16:13)

Leader: God’s people are set aside for a particular purpose:
People: To spread the Good News of God’s love and mercy throughout the world.
Leader: You have been anointed to this holy work.
People: Let us live out the calling that God has placed on our lives.
Leader: May the Lord’s spirit empower and encourage us.
People: Come, Holy Spirit!

Call to Confession (based on 1 Samuel 16:5)

Leader: When we come before God to worship, we must first make ourselves holy. Let us lay bare the sins of our hearts so that we might make ourselves right with God.

Prayer of Confession (based on 1 Samuel 16:7)

You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or
collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:

People: All-seeing Lord, we confess that we are terribly short-sighted. We do not see as we ought to. We ascribe value to people and institutions based on that which is visible to our own eyes, not what is in the heart. Forgive us, O Holy One. Help us to see the world as you do, and to value what is faithful and good above that which appears impressive and enviable. In your mercy, hear our prayers…

(Silent prayers of personal confession)

Declaration of Forgiveness (based on 1 Samuel 16:7)

Leader: Humans see only what is visible to the eyes, but the Lord sees into the heart. The Lord has seen into the depths of your heart and has chosen mercy. Hear the Good News: in Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven!

People: Thanks be to God!
