Hymns

Hymn GTG #305, “Come Sing, O Church, in Joy!”
Hymn GTG #687, “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past”

Call to Worship (based on Daniel 12:8)

Leader: I’ve been told that I must hate my father and mother to be Christ’s disciple.
People: I heard it, but I didn’t understand it.
Leader: I’ve been told that I must be reborn from above.
People: I heard it, but I didn’t understand it.
Leader: I’ve been told that if my eye causes me to sin, I should tear it out and throw it away.
People: I heard it, but I didn’t understand it.
Leader: Let us give thanks that understanding is not a prerequisite for faith!
People: Let us worship our God!

Call to Confession (based on Daniel 12:10)

Leader: Scripture often talks of those who act wickedly in contrast with those who purify, cleanse, and refine themselves, but the truth is that none of us is exclusively one or the other. We all fall short of God’s glory, and we all must humble ourselves through the confession of our sin. Let us seek God’s mercy together.

Popcorn Prayer of Confession (based on Daniel 12:6, 8)

You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness. When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:

People: Heavenly One, all of time and space is in your hands. You see all and know all and understand all. We do not. We are not meant to. And yet, we clamor for knowledge that is beyond our reach. We ask, “When will your future come to pass,” and “What comes next?” We seek concrete answers where you have provided none, and we refuse to be content with our limitedness. We are wrong, O Lord. Forgive us the idolatry of wishing to share your omnipotence and the arrogance of imagining it possible. In your mercy, hear our prayers…

(Silent prayers of personal confession)

Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Daniel 12:13)

Leader: We may receive our inheritance at the end of days, but God’s greatest gift is available to us here and now: in Christ’s name, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
