Hymn GTG #726, “Will You Come and Follow Me”
Hymn GTG #751, “From the Nets of our Labors”
Leader: Jesus is calling to us, “Go out farther, into the deep water.”
People: Where he calls us, we will follow in faith.
Leader: Jesus is calling to us, “Do not be afraid of your sin. From now on, you have a special job to do.”
People: Where he calls us, we will follow in faith.
Leader: Jesus is calling to us.
People: Let us worship in preparation for the journey ahead!
Call to Confession (based on Luke 5:8)
Leader: Our sinfulness keeps pulling us away from Christ, but even now he calls us back to his side. Let us confess our sin, knowing that it cannot keep us apart from God.
Prayer of Confession (based on Luke 5:3-4)
You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness. When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:
People: Holy Lord, we always do our duty. Like the fishermen by the lake, we put in a day’s work, clean our nets, and we go home. We’re even willing to row out a little distance, if it’s not too much trouble. But we confess that we don’t like to row out into the deep water. We don’t like to stray from our comfort zone, from the minimum requirements, from the path of least resistance. Yet that is what you expect of us, for the sake of your kindom. Forgive us, and grant in us a willingness to stretch ourselves, so that we might go wherever you send us, in Christ’s name. In your mercy, hear our prayers… (Silent prayers of personal confession)
Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Luke 5:6)
Leader: When God gives, God gives in abundance. Hear the Good News: God’s mercy is yours. In Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
