Hymns
Hymn GTG #18, “Hallelujah! Sing Praise to Your Creator”
Hymn GTG #24, “God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens”
Call to Worship (based on Genesis 1)
Leader: In the beginning, God spoke and worlds were created.
People: And God saw that it was good.
Leader: After six days of work, God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
People: And God saw that it was very good.
Leader: We gather on the seventh day to rest, to worship, and to celebrate God’s goodness.
People: Let us worship the Lord!
Call to Confession (based on Genesis 1:27)
Leader: God created us in God’s own image, yet all too often we fall far short of this sacred likeness. Let us confess the ways that we have failed to reflect our creator faithfully.
Prayer of Confession (based on Genesis 1:28-30)
You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or
collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:
People: Holy Creator, you take true delight in everything that you have made. Yet we hear your call to stewardship as an invitation to bend creation to our will. We pollute the sky and waters that you call “good”, and we abuse the living things that you have blessed. Even worse, we refuse to change our ways once we understand the damage that we’ve done. Forgive us, O Lord, and remind us that we are created less in the image of your authority and power than in the image of your compassion and love. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)
Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Genesis 1:31)
Leader: At creation, God already knew all the times and ways we would mess up, and yet God still chose to call us “good”. Hear the good news: God loves you exactly as you are. In Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
