I have to start out today with some honesty and vulnerability, and I can’t promise that I won’t cry. This week has been one of the most challenging in my ten years of ministry. I’m not so much grieving the loss of “my” candidate as I am the loss of my sense that what I do, both personally and professionally, matters. What good is a gospel of love and compassion if people choose not to listen? If words of hate and exclusion are acceptable, so long as they’re accompanied by promises of security and personal prosperity? It’s difficult to be a pastoral presence when your own heart is breaking. I’m grateful for all those who have given me the space to be human this week.

Sermon: "One Nation, Under God", Joshua 24:1-5, 14-16, 18b (November 8, 2020)

We join the Israelites today at a significant turning point in their history. They’ve spent forty years wandering in the wilderness under Moses’ leadership, and they’d made a pretty comfortable life for themselves (as comfortable as possible while nomads, anyway). But now, they had a new leader (Moses had died), they’d finally taken control of the promised land, and they were on the cusp of forming a new nation.

Pushing Away the Dark
As many of you know (and to the consternation of many) I am one of those awful, terrible breed of people who (Gasp! Horror of horrors!) begins to listen to Christmas music early.
Whenever anyone has chosen to engage me in discussion about this topic rather than simply expressing their disgust (similar to the surprisingly intense disdain of many for Pumpkin Spice Lattes--another aversion that I simply don't understand) I've told them that a lot of it has to do with my struggle with depression.
