*Call to Worship (Based on Mark 8:27-29)

Leader: Who do people say Jesus is?
People: Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets.
Leader: And what about you? Who do YOU say Jesus is?
People: Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One.
Leader: We have come to bear witness to God’s glory.
People: Let us worship the Lord!

Call to Confession (based on Mark 8:35)

Leader: Jesus tells us that all who want to save their lives will lose them. In faith, let us release the sins we cling to that promise false life so that we can receive the true life that comes from God alone.

Popcorn Prayer of Confession (based on Mark 8:31-32)

You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.

When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:

People: Lord Jesus, you are clear about the high cost of discipleship. The road to the cross is long and difficult, and it ends in death. Yet in the same breath that we proclaim our faith in you, we, like Peter, deny the necessity of this sacrifice. Banish such human thoughts from our minds and fill our hearts with an understanding of God’s plan, for you, for us, and for the world. In your mercy, hear our prayers… (Silent prayers of personal confession)

Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Mark 9:1)

Leader: As we dwell in the already and not yet of God’s kindom, we abide in the knowledge of this Good News: in the name Christ Jesus, we are forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
