Hymn GTG #410, “God Is Calling through the Whisper”
Hymn GTG #421, “Have Mercy, God, upon My Life”
Hymn GTG #805, “Come Sing to God”
Call to Worship (based on 1 Samuel 3:4, 10)
Leader: The Lord called to Samuel,
People: And Samuel replied, “I’m here.”
Leader: The Lord called to Samuel,
People: And Samuel replied, “Speak. Your servant is listening.”
Leader: Do you hear the Lord calling?
People: We are here. Speak. Your servants are listening.
Call to Confession (based on 1 Samuel 3:15-17)
Leader: It is never easy to name wrongdoing and sin aloud. Yet it is only in honesty and transparency that we can hope to find redemption. Let us confess our sins.
Prayer of Confession (based on 1 Samuel 3:13)
You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or
collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:
People: God of all righteousness, we have sinned against you, and yet too often, we only acknowledge half of our transgressions. Our sin lies not only in what we’ve done, but in what we have left undone. We have not spoken up when others use your name to justify their hate and anger. We have not done enough to stop the violence perpetrated by your Church. We have not held one another accountable for our wrongdoing. Forgive us, Lord. Open our ears to words of justified condemnation, and open our eyes to a more faithful way forward. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)
Declaration of Forgiveness (based on 1 Samuel 3:18)
Leader: God is Lord and will do as God pleases. Hear, then, this good news: nothing pleases God more than to show compassion and mercy to God’s children. In Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
