Hymn GTG #785, “In Deepest Night”
Hymn GTG #821, “My Life Flows On”
Call to Worship (based on Jeremiah 29:11-14)
Leader: God’s promise is gracious; God’s plans are sure:
People: Plans for peace and not disaster, a future filled with hope.
Leader: Even when the way seems dark, we know that we are not alone,
People: For God has promised to be with us.
Leader: Even now, the Lord has gathered us here from all places; we are home!
People: Let us worship the Lord!
Call to Confession (based on Jeremiah 29:12-13)
Leader: The Lord says, “When you call me and come and pray to me, I will listen to you. When you search for me, you will find me.” Let us, therefore, seek and call upon God to hear our confession, trusting in the Lord’s mercy.
Prayer of Confession (based on Jeremiah 29:8-9)
You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or
collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:
People: Holy Truth-Teller, we confess that we have been willfully misled. You have always sent us prophets to direct and convict us, but we reject them if we don’t like what they have to say. We refuse to hear their hard truths. We turn away from them to seek voices that tell us what we want to hear, the false prophets who feed us comforting lies. Forgive us, O Lord. Save us from our desire for a faith that will deliver us from hardship, and instead kindle within us a faith that will carry us through all of life’s storms. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)
Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Jeremiah 29:11)
Leader: God does not wish for us to dwell in our guilt and sin, but offers us instead a future filled with hope. Hear the good news: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
