Hymns

Hymn GTG #673, “Jesus, Light of Joy”
Hymn GTG #377, “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light”

Call to Worship (based on John 1:1, 6)

Leader: In the beginning was the Word,
People: And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Leader: Just as John was sent to testify about Jesus, we, too, are called to bear witness.
People: From his fullness, we have all received grace upon grace upon grace.
Leader: Let us lift our voices in song and praise!
People: Let us worship the Lord!

Call to Confession (based on John 1:17)

Leader: As the Law was given through Moses, so grace and truth comes into being through Jesus Christ. Each time that we admit the ways we have fallen short of God’s Law, we do so trusting also in the grace and truth of our Lord. Let us confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession (based on John 1:9-14)

You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or
collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:

People: Most Holy One, you came into this world to make your home among us and shine your brilliant light on all people. But although we were born of this light, we do not welcome it. It reveals a glory that does not belong to us, so we ignore it. It comforts our enemies, so we turn from it. It illuminates our misdeeds, so we reject it. Forgive us our cowardice and selfishness. Help us to be children of your light. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)

Declaration of Forgiveness (based on John 1:18)

Leader: Hear the good news: although no one has ever seen God, Jesus the Christ has made God known through his compassion, mercy, and love. In him, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
