Liturgy: God's Name, Exodus 3:1-15 (October 1, 2023)

*Call to Worship (based on Exodus 3:11-14)

Leader: Moses asked God, “Who am I to free your people?”
People: And God said, “You are the one I am sending.”
Leader: Moses asked God, “And who are YOU to deliver the Israelites?”
People: And God said, “I Am Who I Am.”
Leader: We are enough as we are, and God is enough now and forever – and that is enough.
People: Let us worship the Lord!

Call to Confession (based on Exodus 3:5)

Leader: As we gather before God, we recognize that we are standing on holy ground. Let us therefore name the sins that clothe us and lay our souls bare before the Lord.

Popcorn Prayer of Confession (based on Exodus 3:4, 11)

You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.

When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:

People: Holy Spirit, you call out to us by name, but we beat around the burning bush. We evade and equivocate; we complicate matters that should be simple. Forgive us and help us to serve The One Who Is with all that WE are. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)

Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Exodus 3:2)

Leader: The bush Moses saw on Mount Horeb was in flames, but it didn’t burn up. And so it is with us: our sin surrounds and envelops us, but God does not let it consume us. No matter what sins may be holding you captive, hear this Good News: In Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
