Hymns
Hymn GTG #39, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”
Hymn GTG #465, “What Friend We Have in Jesus”
Call to Worship (based on Exodus 33:12-17)
Leader: We don’t know where we are going or who will lead us,
People: But God knows us by name and goes with us.
Leader: We don’t know who we are without God’s presence among us,
People: So God calls us by name and goes with us.
Leader: When we seek God’s presence, God is already there!
People: Thanks be to God! Let us worship the Lord!
Call to Confession (based on Exodus 33:17)
Leader: Because God loves us and knows each of us by name, God will always answer our prayers. Together, then, let us ask God to forgive our sin.
Prayer of Confession (based on Exodus 33:8-10)
You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:
People: O Righteous One, we know that we often fail to live according to your Word. Sin follows us like a shadow. But although you call us to repent and return to you, we are afraid. It feels safer to keep a respectful distance, bury our guilt deep inside us, and try to move on with our lives. We confess that we avoid the work of a real relationship with you, even though it’s your greatest desire for us. Forgive us, we pray. Give us the courage to share all of ourselves with you, and restore us to your covenantal love. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)
Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Exodus 33:14)
Leader: God’s presence goes with us and gives us rest from our doubts and fears. As God’s presence surrounds you now, be at peace: in Christ’s name, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
