Hymn GTG #432, “How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord”
Call to Worship (based on 2 Timothy 3:16)
Leader: Every scripture is useful for teaching,
People: for showing mistakes,
Leader: for correcting,
People: for training in righteousness.
Leader: It leads us towards wisdom and salvation through Christ. Thanks be to God!
People: Let us worship the Lord!
Call to Confession (based on 2 Timothy 3:17)
Leader: The person who belongs to God is equipped to do everything that is good. But our sin is ever-present and hinders our ability to live out this God-given calling. Let us confess our sin together so that, by the grace of God, we might be freed from that which holds us back from our true calling.
Prayer of Confession (based on 2 Timothy 4:2-4)
You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:
People: Lord of all wisdom, you have equipped us to do good in your name since our childhood. Throughout our lives, you have provided us with sound teachers who correctly guide us in your way. But despite our need for instruction, we turn away from any teachings that correct and confront us. We reject the teachers you have sent and instead choose teachers based on what we want to hear, what makes us feel good, and what allows us to stay as we are. They teach us pleasant myths instead of your eternal truth, and we accept it willingly. Forgive us for our intentional ignorance, O God. Lead us back to your word and to those who teach it faithfully. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)
Declaration of Forgiveness (based on 2 Timothy 3:14)
Leader: This we have learned and firmly believe: that God’s love and mercy stretch from everlasting to everlasting. Therefore, I proclaim to you that in Christ’s holy name, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
