Hymns
Hymn GTG #432, “How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord”
Hymn GTG #64, “I Long for Your Commandments”
Hymn GTG #740, “Lead Me, Guide Me”
Call to Worship (based on Exodus 19:5-7)
Leader: Moses came down from Mount Sinai and set before the people all the words that the Lord commanded him.
People: May we have ears to hear them!
Leader: God has given us both covenant and commandments to bless our lives.
People: May we have the wisdom to receive them!
Leader: Our God is worthy of praise, indeed!
People: Let us worship the Lord!
Call to Confession (based on Exodus 19:5)
Leader: God’s covenant is not a measure of our righteousness, but a way for us to live in right relationship with the Lord. Therefore, let us confess the ways that we’ve fallen short of this covenant, so that we might once again be reconciled to the one whose love knows no bounds.
Prayer of Confession (based on Exodus 20:1-17)
You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:
People: God of deliverance, you have rescued us from slavery to sin, and yet we neglect your simple commandments. We serve the gods of profit and ideology. We idolize our flags and status symbols as if they were more powerful than you. We abuse your name for our own purposes. We treat community and rest as the needs of the weak, instead of blessings from you. We overlook those who take care of us. We dishonor the gift of life and the vows we make to one another. We take what is not ours to take. We gossip and slander, and we covet what others have instead of accepting the abundance you provide. Forgive us, O God. Help us to change our habits and our lives so that we might be more faithful to you, both within ourselves and out in the world. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)
Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Exodus 19:5)
Leader: Beloved, the whole earth belongs to God, and yet God has chosen humankind as God’s most precious possession. Nothing we do can ever change that. Hear this good news: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Thanks be to God.
People: Thanks be to God!
