Hymns
Hymn GTG #772, “Live into Hope”
Hymn GTG #764, “For the Troubles and the Sufferings”
Hymn GTG #749, Come! Live in the Light!”
Call to Worship (based on Genesis 39:1-2, 20-21)
Leader: When we are far from home,
People: God is with us.
Leader: When we are despised and rejected,
People: God is with us.
Leader: We celebrate the one in whom our hope is found.
People: Let us worship the Lord!
Call to Confession (based on Genesis 39:9)
Leader: In light of God’s many blessings, we ought to be living lives of perfect gratitude. And yet, time and again, we do terrible things and sin against God. Let us confess these sins, trusting in God’s mercy, so that they might no longer stand in the way of our thanksgiving.
Prayer of Confession (based on Genesis 39:13-18)
You are invited to speak a word or short phrase that describes a personal or collective sin of which you repent and seek forgiveness.
When the gathered community is finished sharing, we pray together:
People: God of human dignity and divine justice, we confess that we deny others the respect and honor that we claim for ourselves. You have given every human inherent worth, and yet we assign importance based on power, wealth, and authority. We believe the words of those who have them far more than the words of those who do not. And this unearned trust allows manipulation and abuse to flourish. This does not reflect your justice, O God. Forgive us our neglect of the vulnerable, and grant us the courage to always speak truth to power. In your mercy, hear our prayers…
(Silent prayers of personal confession)
Declaration of Forgiveness (based on Genesis 39:20-21)
Leader: God does not abandon us in even our bleakest moments; God’s faithfulness and mercy remain with us always. Hear the Good News: in Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven!
People: Thanks be to God!
