Sermon: "Logos, in Terms of Legos", 2 Timothy 2:8-15 (August 23, 2026)

When I was growing up, my church had a weekly evening program for kids and youth, as many churches do. I don’t remember a whole lot about it, but I *do* remember how confusing I found the program’s name - “Logos”. At that point, I had zero knowledge of ancient Greek or Johannine theology, so my child-brain fished around in my existing frame of reference for a way to make sense out of this unfamiliar word. Without putting too much thought into it and based on absolutely nothing aside from phonetics, I found myself somehow associating this weekly gathering with the interlocking bricks that have defined countless childhoods  - Legos.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word was with God in the beginning. Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word nothing came into being.” For many of us, these words are as familiar as our own names, as comfortable as an old, worn shoe. We recite them faithfully at our Christmas Eve services, year after year, and some of you may have even memorized this passage during your Sunday School days. But as familiar as it is, do we really know what it’s saying?
